A House Democratic effort to pass a resolution limiting Trump’s authority to wage war against Iran was thwarted on Thursday when the Republican chairman of the session unilaterally adjourned the meeting, denying them an opportunity to present their case.
House Democrats had returned to Washington early from their scheduled two-week recess in a bid to secure a vote on the War Powers Resolution, which aimed to curb Trump’s military actions in the region. However, their attempt was met with resistance from Republican lawmakers, who chose not to allow the Democrats to speak on the matter.
“This latest attempt by Democrats to rein in the escalating conflict with Iran was met with a Republican blockade,” said Congresswoman Deborah Ross, a Democrat, in a statement on X. “Without congressional intervention, Trump’s war efforts will continue unchecked, lacking both accountability and a clear endgame.”
Senate Democrats have vowed to revive the war powers vote when Congress reconvenes next week.
