IMF representative Dr. Maher Beni said that Pakistan’s economic stability requires a prudent fiscal policy, strict monetary discipline, and ongoing reforms. Speaking at a seminar in the federal capital, Dr. Beni warned that tensions in the Middle East pose a serious risk to both the global and Pakistani economies, as the conflict is disrupting energy markets and driving up oil prices worldwide. He noted that the Middle East dispute is severely affecting trade routes and financial conditions, but Pakistan’s IMF programme is moving in the right direction and better preparation is needed to absorb economic shocks. The IMF official added that the ongoing war in the Middle East will significantly slow global economic growth by 2026, and oil‑importing countries, including Pakistan, will face heightened difficulties. Dr. Beni highlighted rising energy and food prices, potential declines in remittances, and tight fiscal conditions as serious threats, reiterating that careful fiscal policy, strict monetary discipline, and continued reforms are essential for Pakistan’s stability. He said the regional conflict has also negatively impacted global supply chains, food and fertilizer prices, and has slowed the pace of economic growth in the region, with prolonged hostilities increasing the risk of further downturns. The IMF representative urged Pakistan to stay committed to maintaining economic stability, strengthening fiscal and external reserves, and to protect vulnerable groups from inflation through targeted, temporary measures rather than broad subsidies. Dr. Beni further emphasized the need to expand trade routes, invest in critical infrastructure, promote regional cooperation, and ensure comprehensive development led by the private sector to make the economy more resilient and robust.
