Germany Seeks China’s Assistance in Brokerage Efforts with Iran

In a bid to expedite a peaceful resolution to the Middle East conflict, Germany’s top diplomat Johann Wadephul engaged in a telephone conversation with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, according to a statement released by the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin. The two nations share a common objective of ensuring unimpeded navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, with neither side willing to see individual states dictate control over sea lanes or impose tolls for passage. Germany believes that China’s significant influence with Iran could be leveraged to encourage the latter towards a negotiated settlement and an end to hostilities with the Gulf states.
