A growing chorus of US lawmakers is calling for the invocation of the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution, which enables a transfer of presidential power in cases where the president is unable to perform their duties. The move comes in response to President Donald Trump’s escalating rhetoric and actions, particularly his threats against civilian infrastructure in Iran.
Arizona Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari has joined the fray, condemning Trump’s actions as “devastating, illegal” and “crossing every line” in a recent post on X. She specifically cited the past 48 hours as a period of heightened aggression from the president.
Congresswoman Ilham Omar of Minnesota has also expressed her outrage, stating that Trump’s actions are “not acceptable” and urging the invocation of the 25th Amendment, alongside impeachment and removal from office. Her sentiments were echoed by Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury of New Mexico, who called for Congress and the Cabinet to take action under the 25th Amendment.
Former Republican Congressman Joe Walsh of Illinois weighed in, labeling Trump a “stain on this country and the world” and urging the immediate invocation of the 25th Amendment. Meanwhile, Democratic Senate member Chris Murphy posted on X, suggesting that if he were part of Trump’s Cabinet, he would spend Easter consulting with constitutional lawyers about the possibility of invoking the 25th Amendment, given the president’s “utterly unhinged” behavior and the thousands of lives already lost under his administration.
