Trump’s Threats Raise Grave Concerns Over International Law

A leading expert in international human rights law has denounced Trump’s recent warning as a gross violation of moral and legal principles. Michael Becker, a professor at Trinity College Dublin, expressed his outrage over the US president’s threat of “widespread and indiscriminate destruction” against Iran’s civilian population.

Becker, a former ICJ employee, pointed out that such an attack would be a war crime on a massive scale and a crime against humanity. He noted that while Trump’s social media post may not explicitly convey genocidal intent, the language used is still deeply disturbing.

“It’s almost beside the point whether Trump’s words are genocidal or not,” Becker said, emphasizing the severity of the situation. “What’s clear is that Trump’s statement constitutes an unlawful threat of further aggression and envisions indiscriminate and criminal attacks against innocent civilians in Iran.”

Becker urged that Trump’s comments be universally condemned, including by his own party, the Republicans.
