Preparation of National Action Plan for Small-Scale Gold Mining

Gilgit (P.R.) – Associate Professor Dr. Shaukat Ali of the Department of Environmental Science at Karakoram International University served as a keynote speaker at a three‑day stakeholder consultation workshop on formulating a National Action Plan for Artisanal and Small‑Scale Gold Mining (ASGM). According to the university’s public relations office, the workshop was organized by the Ministry of Climate Change & Environmental Coordination (MoCC&EC) in partnership with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Government ministries, environmental agencies, academic institutions, and development organizations discussed sustainable mining practices for Pakistan. During the session, Dr. Shaukat Ali presented “Introduction to Mercury: Human Health and Environmental Impacts,” highlighting the severe risks associated with mercury use in artisanal gold mining. He outlined pathways of mercury pollution, its toxic effects on human health, and the urgent need to adopt safer, mercury‑free mining methods. Dr. Ali also shared findings from his ongoing research on ASGM activities in the Gilgit region, adding a local perspective to the national dialogue.
