Gilgit (Special Correspondent) – Spring is ending and summer is about to begin, yet the city of Gilgit continues to endure a 21‑hour daily load‑shedding schedule. The Power Department announced a load‑management program effective until April 30. Under the scheme, electricity will be available for one and a half hours during the day and another one and a half hours in the evening. The program notes that technical faults could disrupt this schedule, and residents may be without power, for which the department apologizes in advance. According to the Gilgit‑Baltistan Power Department, water levels in the streams have not risen, preventing an increase in electricity generation. Until stream flows improve, power production will remain low and load‑shedding will continue as outlined. Moreover, the outage has halted not only commercial centers but also factories, bringing industrial activity to a standstill. The shortage is aggravating problems for both public and private offices as well as the business community. Students are facing difficulties preparing for exams due to lack of electricity. Traders and entrepreneurs are distressed; they say they must run generators, which multiplies their operating costs. Factory closures and rising expenses are also fueling unemployment and inflation. Power officials say that in the near future the load‑shedding cannot be fully controlled because population growth and electricity demand keep rising while generation capacity cannot keep pace. Residents note that because electricity is unavailable, a large portion of income that would normally be spent on health, education and food is now diverted to fuel for generators and other power sources, with most of the fuel being purchased outside Gilgit‑Baltistan, leading to a decline in local purchasing power.
