Skardu Airport will receive its first international flight on August 14th, Pakistan’s Independence Day from Dubai. This will be the first time Gilgit Baltistan receives an international flight landing in the region. The reason Skardu Airport has not served international flights was the lack of a refueling facility According to Civil Aviation Authority, Skardu Airport is now ready to serve international flights after fuel refueling facility which will be inaugurated on August 11th.
Currently, Skardu Airport is one of the busiest airport in Pakistan. According to CAA 12 Full to Capacity Airbus A320 Flights are being handled at Skardu Airport. Skardu Airport is the only airport in Gilgit Baltistan where big planes like Airbus and Boeing can land. Sometimes, the Karakoram Highway and Jaglot Skardu Road get blocked because of floods and other natural disasters. Foreign tourists had to first go to Islamabad airport and then come to Gilgit Baltistan. But now, with international flights coming directly to Skardu, tourists can avoid the tough and risky journey on Skardu Road and Karakoram Highway. This, in turn, holds the potential to foster increased tourism and generate more employment opportunities, consequently contributing to the region’s overall growth.
