Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Briefed on Afghan Refugees’ Repatriation Meeting

Governor Faisal Karim Kundi of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chaired a meeting on the current situation of Afghan refugees in the province. Commissioner for Afghan Refugees Shakil Safi gave the governor a detailed briefing, with the Chairman of the Red Crescent Society for the Merged Areas, Imran Wazir, and officials from the NADRA office also in attendance. Participants were informed that 43 camps have been established for Afghan refugees in Peshawar, Nowshera, D.I. Khan, Kohat, Buner, Mardan, Swabi, Malakand, Dir, Mansehra, Battagram, Lakki Marwat, Tank, Hangu, and Chitral. The briefing noted that ten camps have already been cleared as refugees return, and since 2023, nearly 2 million undocumented Afghan refugees have been repatriated in a phased process scheduled through 2025. NADRA is providing biometric services at the Landi Kotal and Torkham border transit points, facilitating easier cross‑border movement after families complete biometric and data registration. The governor was told that about 3,000 refugees return daily via the Torkham border, but security concerns and occasional border closures create challenges. It was also reported that bank accounts and mobile SIMs of illegally residing refugees have been deactivated, while the Red Crescent Society for the Merged Areas continues to offer assistance at Torkham, including clean drinking water, primary health care, first‑aid, and ambulance services. Approximately 13,000 refugees have received initial medical aid and other support from the Red Crescent. Governor Kundi instructed NADRA officials to complete biometric and data registration for refugees in Kohat, Peshawar, and other camps. He emphasized that proper registration will reduce crossing difficulties and called for all possible facilities at the Landi Kotal transit point to support the return process. The governor praised the Afghan Commission’s performance in ensuring dignified care and repatriation of Afghan refugees.
