Peshawar Zalmi’s star captain Babar Azam etched his name in the annals of Pakistan Super League (PSL) history after a scintillating century against Islamabad United in the PSL 11 Qualifier at the National Stadium. His 103 off 59 deliveries, comprising 12 fours and four sixes, propelled Zalmi to a commanding 221/7, while Islamabad’s 151 all out sealed a resounding 70-run victory and secured Zalmi’s spot in the final. This century marked Babar’s second hundred of the ongoing season, making him just the second batter in PSL history to achieve this feat in a single edition, following in the footsteps of Usman Khan, who first accomplished it in PSL 9. Furthermore, Babar’s fourth PSL century has tied him with Usman Khan for the most hundreds in the tournament’s history. His impressive knock also saw him draw level with Fakhar Zaman for the most runs scored in a single PSL season, a benchmark set by Fakhar with 588 runs in the 2022 edition. Babar has now matched that tally in just 10 innings this season, boasting an average of 98.00 and a strike rate of 146.63, with two centuries and three half-centuries to his name. Following his Player of the Match award, Babar expressed satisfaction with his current form, attributing it to the hard work he invested before the tournament. He emphasized his desire to maintain consistency and credited his teammates, particularly Mohammad Haris and Kusal Mendis, for providing strong starts at the top, which allows him to settle in and build the innings accordingly. Babar also praised the crucial contributions of Aaron Hardie, Sufiyan Muqeem, and Mohammad Basit, highlighting their pivotal role in turning the Qualifier decisively in Zalmi’s favour. According to Babar, their bowling burst in the second half of Islamabad’s innings was the turning point, showcasing the all-round effort his team has demonstrated throughout the tournament. With just one defeat in the campaign, Zalmi now head into the final with momentum firmly on their side and their captain in record-equaling form.
