Builders of the Working Class: No Compromise on Rights at Skardu Event

Skardu (City Reporter) – On International Workers’ Day, a prestigious ceremony organized by the renowned literary group Bazm-e-Ilm-o-Fun was held at Iqbal Hall in Skardu. The event attracted a large crowd of prominent political, social, academic, and journalistic figures from across the city, as well as many citizens, who highlighted workers’ rights and demanded the implementation of the government’s decision to set the minimum wage at 40,000 rupees. Speaking at the ceremony, well‑known journalist, columnist, and author Qasim Naseem said that relevant authorities must play an active role in protecting workers’ rights, emphasizing that laborers are the builders of any nation and, as Muslims, we must safeguard their rights in every respect. Assistant Director of the Labor Department, Sirajuddin, stated that the department is addressing labor issues within its capacity, having secured wages for many workers, released salaries for school teachers, protected workers’ rights, and imposed a ban on child labor. PTI leader Yusuf Numbdar asserted that we must raise our voices for workers’ rights through speeches and writings, because without public discourse, labor issues will remain hidden, and that solving these problems requires collective effort from all members of society. Jamiat‑e‑Islami leader Professor Ehsanullah noted that workers’ rights are enshrined in the Qur’an, quoting Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that a worker’s wage should be paid before his money dries up, and that Islam forbids exploitation. May 1 also commemorates the sacrifices of workers martyred in Chicago, USA. Civil society activist Najaf Ali called for the immediate establishment of a Labor Court to prioritize and resolve labor disputes. PPP leader Abdullah Haider highlighted the severe labor problems in Gilgit‑Baltistan, urging the Labor Department to act against the massive exploitation that he described as the greatest tragedy of the century. Muhammad Ishaq Jalal criticized the neglect of workers’ rights, comparing the department’s performance to zero, similar to other ministries. PTI leader Khawaja Mudassar accused the current government of confiscating workers’ rights and called its role highly questionable.
