Egypt Implements Electricity Price Hikes Amid Global Energy Shortages

Egypt’s Electricity Ministry has unveiled a plan to boost electricity prices for high-consumption households and businesses, effective from April, due to the ongoing global energy crisis. According to the ministry, low-consumption households will be shielded from the price increase. As a result, electricity tariffs for residential consumers using up to 2,000 kilowatt-hours per month will remain unaffected, whereas higher residential brackets will incur an average price rise of 16 percent. Commercial electricity prices across all categories will also see an average increase of approximately 20 percent. This move comes as Egypt grapples with the financial implications of higher fuel costs and reduced supply, exacerbated by its status as one of the region’s largest energy importers and most heavily indebted economies in the Middle East.
