Naltar Lake
Naltar valley is located in the heart of Karakoram in Gilgit Baltistan region. Gilgit Baltistan has more than 2000 lakes. In fact Gilgit Baltistan has the largest fresh water reservoirs on the planet. Naltar lakes are one of them. Naltar valley is famous for its greenery, forests and beautiful lakes. Besides lakes Naltar is famous for ski resort. Pakistan Air force PAF has installed ski chairlift at Naltar Ski resort.
There are many places in the world which are famous for different reasons. Some places are famous for their lakes, lush green valleys or pleasant weather etc. Naltar has all qualities which a perfect place deserves. Naltar lakes are colorful, crystal clear and have lush green surroundings. Naltar lakes are famous for their emerald, aquamarine and azure color of water. Naltar lake or Bashkiri lake is a colorful crystal clear green emerald lake. The color of water is green due to lush green surroundings and grasses inside water. The surrounding area of the lake is stunning covered by pine trees and snow capped peaks. The beauty of Naltar lakes are beyond imagination. The trek to Naltar lake is also stunning . Due to its serene beauty and colorful water Naltar lakes are famous in the world.
There are three lakes in Naltar valley: Naltar 1, Naltar 2 and Naltar 3. Among these Naltar3 also called Bashkiri lake is famous. This lake is located approximately 12 km from Naltar Bala. A non metallic jeep road connects Bashkiri lake with Naltar Bala.
How to reach Naltar?
Naltar valley is located at a distance of 40 Km from Gilgit city. It takes 2 hours to reach Naltar valley from Gilgit. Nomal village is located between Naltar and Gilgit city. Naltar valley is located just opposite to Nomal valley. A jeep road connects Naltar valley with Nomal village. After crossing Nomal village you will reach Naltar valley. Naltar valley is a beautiful pine forested valley. Naltar is divided in two villages: Naltar Bala and Naltar Pain. From Naltar Bala a jeep track leads to Bashkiri lake or Naltar lake. However in winter this place is inaccessible due to snow. Extra trekking is needed to reach this place in winter.
When to visit Naltar Lake?
The best season to visit Naltar Lake is May to October. In summer whole Naltar valley looks like a fairy land. The fresh and crystal clear water of Naltar streams, the green valley and snow capped peaks are just amazing. So we recommend summer to visit Naltar lake. Autumn is also best season when colors of trees start to change. The colorful trees in Autumn make whole valley like a dream land.

In winter Naltar receives heavy snow fall. Naltar valley receives more snow and rain than other parts of Gilgit Baltistan. That’s why the area is lush green and surrounded by pine trees. In winter due to blockage of road by snow it is almost inaccessible. If you want to visit in winter then you have to travel with trekking suits so that you can reach Naltar lake.
