Babar Azam’s impressive run in the Pakistan Super League (PSL 11) has been bolstered by targeted technical tweaks, according to Peshawar Zalmi head coach Misbah-ul-Haq. In a recent interview during PSL 11 coverage, JP Duminy asked Misbah about Babar Azam’s batting approach and whether any modifications had been made despite the batter being described as playing his natural game. Misbah clarified that the focus was on rectifying minor technical imperfections rather than altering Babar’s inherent style. He explained that timing-based players like Babar often struggle when they try to hit the ball too forcefully, disrupting their balance and overall stance. Misbah noted that in Babar’s case, his front shoulder was opening slightly too early, hindering his ability to play through the off side and making shots like the pull and cut more challenging. “We helped Babar maintain his stance and trust his natural timing rather than forcing strokes,” Misbah said. He added that this realisation came from Babar himself, who acknowledged that he was “losing his shape” and trying to force his shots despite being a player who relies on timing and placement. Another crucial adjustment involved Babar’s movement against spin. Misbah pointed out that his front leg had been crossing slightly, forcing him to play across the line, particularly against left-arm spinners. According to Misbah, this issue has now been addressed, with Babar clearing his front leg better and creating more space. “This has opened up the off side and allowed him to access more scoring areas, including straight hits, strokes toward mid-wicket, and the slog sweep,” he explained. A cleaner bat path has also improved his control against spin. Babar’s technical improvements have translated into strong performances in PSL 11. The Peshawar Zalmi captain has been among the tournament’s leading run-scorers, crossing the 500-run mark during the league stage while maintaining an impressive average and strike rate. He also played a decisive role in the playoffs, scoring a match-winning century in the qualifier to guide Zalmi into the final. Misbah expressed satisfaction with the progress, noting that the refinements have played a significant role in Babar Azam’s consistent performances in PSL 11 following a challenging ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
