The Commissioner of Gilgit‑Baltistan, Kamal Khan, issued a hard‑line notice addressing the severe electricity problems in Skardu, the repeated tardiness of officials and staff in government offices, the unpaid compensation for government lands and roads, and the urgent reconstruction of a wall collapsed during recent encroachments at Government Higher Secondary School No 1 Skardu. Sources say the commissioner was briefed on the extreme load‑shedding affecting Skardu and the resulting hardships for residents. He immediately ordered Deputy Commissioner Skardu to resolve all issues without delay. The commissioner directed that uninterrupted power be supplied to traders and the business community during daytime hours to prevent disruption of commercial activities, emphasizing that resolving public grievances is the administration’s top priority.
According to reports, compensation for land parcels in Skardu has been pending for nearly 20 years, causing severe distress among locals. The Gilgit‑Baltistan government disburses roughly PKR 5 million annually, while arrears have ballooned to PKR 200‑250 million. In response, the commissioner instructed senior officials to draft a formal letter addressing the outstanding payments.
He also ordered the immediate rebuilding of the wall at Government Higher Secondary School No 1 Skardu that collapsed during illegal encroachments. The commissioner directed the CMD of the Local Development Board (LDB) to complete the wall construction promptly so that school operations are not disrupted.
Commissioner Kamal Khan stressed that all fundamental issues in Skardu will be tackled on a priority basis and that no negligence will be tolerated. He affirmed that the government’s revenue stream will be maintained under all circumstances, with no compromise.
