The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has embarked on a concerted drive to recover billions of rupees in unpaid dues from various stakeholders in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), with a stern warning to defaulters to settle their outstanding payments by April 29 or face contract termination. The PCB had already begun this recovery process during the 11th edition of the PSL, but to no avail. Sources indicate that massive unpaid amounts remain, prompting the PCB to take a more stringent approach. Following the issuance of notices to several entities, including early PSL franchises, many have made their full payments. Meanwhile, the franchises themselves are still awaiting around Rs. 400 million each related to the 10th edition of the PSL. When questioned about the unpaid amounts owed to franchises, officials clarified that payment of franchise fees is mandatory under the agreement. They added, “How can we pay you until we receive payments from other stakeholders?” In a departure from past practices, the PCB has adopted a new approach for the PSL 10, where each franchise was supposed to receive Rs. 975 million as its share. However, a significant stakeholder still owes the PCB Rs. 4.7 billion, with a substantial portion linked to PSL-related payments. The stakeholder has been dodging payment, citing financial losses and preventing the finalization of accounts. As a result, the PCB had initially barred two TV channels from participating in the bidding for the PSL 11 media rights. Interestingly, the new media rights holder allowed those same channels to broadcast the matches. To mitigate this risk, the PCB has now secured a bank guarantee from the new media rights holder, which can be invoked in case of non-payment.
