Joetial Road Closure Halts Traffic in Gilgit Rural Area

The closure of Joetial Road in the Haramosh rural area of Gilgit district has completely stopped movement, causing severe hardship for local residents. Community leaders Hidayat Ali, Imdad Ali, Haji Awan Ali, Shah Farhan Ali, Hamid Hussain, and Muhammad Iqbal explained that Joetial is located about 80 km from Gilgit city and lacks basic facilities. The area has only a primary school and no civil dispensary, forcing patients to travel to distant towns such as Dasu for treatment. Residents say the road is the sole route for both travel and food supply, and the week‑long blockage has paralyzed daily life. Students, women, elders, and children are experiencing intense mental distress, and travel difficulties have increased. In Gilgit‑Baltistan’s mountainous regions, landslides and seasonal weather frequently close roads, severely disrupting transport and supply chains. The community has urged the Department of Works and Communications to take immediate action to restore the road, requesting machinery if local resources are insufficient, so that the public’s problems can be alleviated.
