Islamabad United’s new head coach Luke Ronchi has shed light on his coaching journey, which began after taking the reins of the franchise in Pakistan Super League (PSL 11), amidst comparisons with former Pakistan white-ball head coach Mike Hesson. Ronchi, who spent six years as the batting coach of New Zealand Cricket, joined Islamabad United two years after Hesson’s departure. Their paths crossed again in franchise cricket when Hesson led Islamabad United to a PSL title in 2024, before stepping down. Now 45, Ronchi has taken over from Hesson, emphasizing that his coaching philosophy is distinct from his predecessor’s. “I bring a different energy to the game,” Ronchi stated, adding that “a one-size-fits-all approach would make the game dull.” He stressed that his primary responsibility is to infuse his own identity into the team environment, rather than replicating past methods. Ronchi acknowledged that comparisons between the two coaches are inevitable, given their shared career paths. However, he emphasized that both coaches operate with distinct perspectives and approaches to the game. Ronchi has a strong connection with Islamabad United, having played for the franchise from 2018 to 2020 and contributing to their 2018 PSL title-winning campaign. He holds the record for the highest powerplay strike rate in PSL history, exceeding 182. Ronchi’s transition into coaching began during his playing days with New Zealand, where he often provided backup support to teammates. After retiring from international cricket, he shifted his focus toward mentoring players across franchise teams, eventually leading to a full-time coaching role with New Zealand Cricket during the COVID-19 period. Reflecting on his return to Islamabad United, Ronchi noted that the team has undergone significant changes, even with captain Shadab Khan remaining part of the squad. “It’s a substantial change,” he said. “Shadab has evolved as a cricketer, and the squad is vastly different.” Ronchi highlighted the importance of balancing his coaching style with the franchise’s established culture, noting that aligning his methods with the team’s environment and leadership is crucial while maintaining his personal approach. He also emphasized the broader purpose of the PSL, prioritizing long-term player development over short-term results. “If you focus solely on winning each year, you risk being short-sighted,” he said, adding that the competition plays a vital role in producing future international cricketers for Pakistan. Ronchi noted that Islamabad United’s calm and structured philosophy aligns with his own coaching mindset, where reducing pressure and allowing players to perform freely is a priority. Rather than enforcing a rigid system, Ronchi favors a flexible approach that combines instinct with analysis to suit different players and conditions. As he continues to manage his dual responsibilities with New Zealand and Islamabad United, Ronchi remains optimistic about future success, noting that winning a white-ball tournament would be a significant milestone in his coaching career.
