PSL 11: Hyderabad Kingsmen’s Hammad Azam Fires Back at Mohammad Rizwan’s Post-Match Comments

All-rounder Hammad Azam of the Hyderabad Kingsmen has come out swinging against Mohammad Rizwan, who sparked controversy by suggesting that his side, Hyderabad, didn’t deserve a spot in the PSL 11 playoffs. Rizwan made the remarks after the Kingsmen secured a dramatic playoff berth with a resounding 108-run victory over RawalPindiz in their final league match. Hyderabad’s impressive 244/6 and subsequent bowling out of RawalPindiz for 136 earned them a tie on points with Lahore Qalandars, with the Kingsmen advancing on net run-rate. Rizwan had stated that he didn’t think Hyderabad deserved qualification, although he acknowledged it was his personal opinion. However, Hammad has now responded strongly, labeling Rizwan’s comments as surprising, especially given his experience as a captain. He expressed disappointment after hearing Rizwan’s post-match press conference and felt that such a statement was unwarranted from someone who has led a PSL side for years and also served as Pakistan captain. According to Hammad, a single poor game should not be the sole basis for judging a team’s qualification. He also pointed out RawalPindiz’s own performance, suggesting that Rizwan’s side should focus on its own results before questioning another team’s right to participate in the playoffs. Hammad noted that Hyderabad had previously bowled RawalPindiz out for 125 and then defeated them by over 100 runs in the return fixture, further solidifying their case. The all-rounder also took issue with Rizwan’s reported remarks about preferring another team to win before the match, stating that a captain should always prioritize finishing strongly and motivating his own team to win regardless of other outcomes. Hammad rejected claims that he had encouraged anyone to take the game lightly, emphasizing that the only proper approach is to strive for victory or, at the very least, limit the damage in defeat. His response has now added fuel to the PSL 11 playoff fire, with Hyderabad’s qualification already one of the most talked-about moments of the tournament.
