According to a report from Population Welfare Department in Gilgit-Baltistan, the poverty rate in Hunza district is at the lowest level. While Diamer has the highest poverty rate.

According to the Population Welfare Department, poverty rate based on the head count ratio in Gilgit-Baltistan is as follows:

  1. Diamer: 74.2%
  2. Skardu: 44.8%
  3. Skardu: 36.1%
  4. Astore: 34.9%
  5. Kharmang: 34%
  6. Ganche: 24%
  7. Gilgit: 17.1%
  8. Nagar: 15.2%
  9. Ghizer: 14.3%
  10. Hunza: 2%

According to the report, Hunza district has the lowest poverty rate in Gilgit-Baltistan. Let’s find out why Hunza has such low poverty. In 1982 , The Aga Khan Rural Support Program (AKRPS) started in Gilgit Baltistan. AKRSP program was started in Hunza Nagar, Gilgit, Ghizer , Skardu and Ghanche. AKRSP played a crucial role in reducing poverty in GB specifically in Hunza . Thanks to this program, education, agriculture, and different sectors in Hunza have improved, leading to more prosperity for the people.

Today, Hunza is considered to be the most educated district in the country. Its natives are now not only occupying high positions but also excelling in various businesses, especially in the China-Pakistan trade.
The people of Hunza have gained economic independence through their involvement in various sectors like import export, agriculture and tourism. About 2% of the population earns directly from tourism, others engage in various businesses such as horticulture (exporting cherries and apples), mineral mining (such as the gemstone business, rubies, and marble), and the software industry.
Overall, the Aga Khan Rural Support Program has played an important role in changing the economic landscape of Hunza, making it a prosperous and prosperous region.
