NDMA Conducts First Comprehensive Search and Rescue Mock Drill in Pakistan

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) held its first comprehensive mock drill focused on search and rescue operations. The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) at NDMA headquarters in Islamabad successfully executed the exercise to test an integrated system for handling potential hazards and disasters. The drill aims to enhance the effectiveness of the central, coordinated search and rescue framework. Conducted against the backdrop of possible monsoon threats, especially flood conditions, the NEOC ensured proactive measures through advanced weather forecasting, satellite data, and timely warnings. Under the INSAR framework, all relevant agencies and volunteers participated, including Rescue 1122, Civil Defense, the armed forces, and federal and provincial authorities. Scenarios simulated simultaneous glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF), floods, and earthquakes—featuring a GLOF in Gilgit‑Baltistan, floods across various regions, and earthquake drills in Islamabad and Muzaffarabad. The event evaluated institutional preparedness, coordination, and rapid response, emphasizing effective communication, timely information exchange, and a unified command system. The critical role of regional volunteers in disaster response was highlighted. NDMA Chairman stressed the importance of delivering timely public information during the drill and addressing gaps in the response system. An integrated, efficient system was deemed essential to minimize damage from natural disasters, with the NEOC’s timely warnings and risk identification underscored. NDMA is committed to making such drills a permanent element of the national strategy, strengthening the NEOC as the national hub for early warning and risk communication. The NEOC continues to provide advance weather and hazard alerts nationwide, and NDMA confirms that the current weather situation aligns precisely with the forecast released by the NEOC in January.
