Niaz Stadium Set to Be Handed Over to PSL Franchise Owners

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is poised to relinquish operational control of Niaz Stadium in Hyderabad to the Kingsmen Group, as part of a comprehensive redevelopment plan for the historic cricket venue. Sources indicate that the transfer process has been hindered by the packed schedule of PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, but ongoing discussions between the two parties are expected to yield results. Hyderabad Kingsmen owner Fawad Sarwar is optimistic that the redevelopment work can be completed within a timeframe of four to six months, contingent on the finalization of the agreement. The proposed project encompasses significant infrastructure upgrades at Niaz Stadium, alongside the construction of a five-star hotel and a high-performance centre in Hyderabad. Upon completion, the Kingsmen Group will assume full management and operational responsibilities for the stadium. This redevelopment initiative is part of a broader PCB effort to upgrade cricket infrastructure across Pakistan. Earlier, the PCB and the Sindh government collaborated on a joint renovation project to bring Niaz Stadium up to international standards, with improvements focusing on pitches, the outfield, dressing rooms, practice facilities, lighting systems, hospitality areas, broadcasting facilities, and overall matchday operations. The project has gained added significance following the expansion of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) to eight teams, with Niaz Stadium serving as the home ground of the Hyderabad Kingsmen franchise. Established in 1961, Niaz Stadium is revered as one of Pakistan’s iconic cricket venues, having hosted five Test matches and seven ODIs, including the opening match of the 1987 Reliance World Cup between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The stadium has witnessed numerous historic moments in cricket history, including Pakistan pacer Jalaluddin’s first-ever hat-trick in ODI cricket against Australia in 1982 and former Pakistan captain Imran Khan’s final ODI match in 1992, before leading Pakistan to its World Cup triumph later that year. Notably, Pakistan has never suffered a defeat in an international Test or ODI match at Niaz Stadium. Legendary cricketers such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, and Javed Miandad have also graced the venue with their presence over the years.
