Jason Gillespie, head coach of the Hyderabad Kingsmen, has pinpointed the need for greater responsibility from his players following their batting unit’s underwhelming performance in a tense loss to Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL 11) at National Bank Stadium. Speaking after the match, Gillespie highlighted areas of concern, including batting consistency, individual accountability, and crucial execution during pivotal moments of the game. Despite recent setbacks, Gillespie expressed optimism about the team’s upcoming fixtures, citing the potential return of Maxwell in the next couple of games pending final confirmation. The 50-year-old former Australia all-rounder emphasized that the team’s recent near-misses, particularly in the last two matches, have presented opportunities to push the game forward. Gillespie did not mince words in addressing the team’s top-order struggles, stating that the squad’s exciting talent does not exempt players from accountability. He emphasized that every player selected to play for Hyderabad is expected to perform, adding that while certain aspects of the team’s performance are encouraging, consistency remains a pressing issue. In analyzing the latest defeat, Gillespie pointed to two critical phases where the team lost control, specifically the loss of wickets in the first six overs and again at the back end, despite a promising partnership between Marnus and Kusal. The team’s batting woes were evident, with Hyderabad Kingsmen being bowled out for 145 in 18.2 overs, as Peshawar Zalmi’s spin duo, Iftikhar Ahmed and Sufiyan Muqeem, dominated the middle overs. The Kingsmen’s top order struggled, with Maaz Sadaqat scoring 17 and Saim Ayub making 14, while Sharjeel Khan and Usman Khan fell for two and a golden duck, respectively. Kusal Perera stood out with a strong innings of 58 off 35 balls, including five fours and two sixes, while Marnus Labuschagne added 27 off 27 balls with three boundaries. Irfan Khan and Hassan Khan scored nine runs each, while Maheesh Theekshana and Hunain Shah were dismissed without scoring. In response, Peshawar Zalmi faced some difficulty during the chase but reached the target on the final ball of the 20th over, thanks to Iftikhar Ahmed (15 not out) and Aamer Jamal (6 not out) holding their nerve to secure the win. Captain Babar Azam led the scoring with 43 off 37 balls, hitting six fours, while Kusal Mendis and Michael Bracewell contributed 27 and 25 runs, respectively, to keep the chase on track.
