Election frenzy peaks as political parties launch campaigns

Gilgit (AM Haider) – General elections are scheduled for June 7 2026 in Gilgit‑Baltistan, and political activity has surged. The Pakistan Peoples Party, Pakistan Muslim League‑N, Majlis‑e‑Wahdat‑e‑Muslimeen and other political and religious groups have officially started their election campaigns. Party leaders are actively seeking tickets in various constituencies, and those who have secured tickets have set up election offices and intensified public outreach. A key feature of Gilgit‑Baltistan politics is that individual personalities often outweigh party affiliation. Consequently, candidates who do not receive tickets frequently run as independents, putting pressure on parties to allocate tickets to them. In the previous election, Pakistan Tehreek‑e‑Insaf defeated other parties and formed the government, though opposition parties labeled the election controversial. About two and a half years later, after former chief minister Khalid Khurshid Khan was disqualified, the political landscape shifted and, with the help of a forward block, Pakistan Muslim League‑N and Pakistan Peoples Party formed a government that lasted until the caretaker setup was established. During this period, an interesting dynamic emerged: despite being part of the government, PML‑N’s provincial leadership continued to criticize the administration, while PPP, though not fully detached from government decisions, maintained a critical stance. The question of which party will govern Gilgit‑Baltistan over the next five years will be decided on June 7. Overall, the 2026 Gilgit‑Baltistan elections could influence both local and national politics, with public issues, inflation, political narratives and personal influence playing decisive roles.
