Al-Azhar University Condemns Israel’s Approval of Death Penalty for Palestinians

Following Israel’s passage of a law enabling the execution of Palestinian detainees, Al-Azhar University has issued a scathing critique of the international community’s response to the move.
In a statement carried by the Wafa news agency, after the Knesset approved the legislation yesterday, the Egyptian institution expressed its profound disappointment with the collapse of the international legal system, and its inability to counter the Israeli occupation’s decision to pass a bill implementing the death penalty against Palestinian prisoners and detainees.
As one of the oldest and most influential Islamic scholarship centres in the Muslim world, Al-Azhar decried the measure, stating it exposes the Israeli occupation’s brutal nature, which not only continues to commit atrocities but also seeks to legitimise them through legislation.
Al-Azhar reiterated its “categorical rejection” of the measure, labelling it a desperate attempt by the occupation to cloak murder with a false and transparent legal veneer.
It urged the international community and rights groups to assume their moral and legal obligations, and to take swift and immediate action to halt these actions.
