Global Health Risks Escalate as Iran’s Nuclear Sites Come Under Fire

In a stark warning, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organisation, sounded the alarm over the escalating threat to Iran’s nuclear facilities, particularly the Bushehr nuclear power plant, following a recent US-Israeli strike in the vicinity.

The strike has heightened concerns that a nuclear accident could occur, resulting in devastating health consequences that would affect generations to come, Tedros cautioned on social media platform X. As the conflict intensifies, the risks and threats continue to mount, he noted.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has confirmed that a projectile struck near the power plant, claiming the life of one of the site’s staff members who was killed by falling debris. The Bushehr plant, Iran’s sole operational nuclear power facility, is situated in the city of Bushehr, home to a population of 250,000 people, and serves as a critical industrial and military hub for the country.
