UN Rights Chief Slams ‘Appalling’ Threats and Rhetoric in Middle East Conflict

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has denounced a disturbing escalation of inflammatory language and threats in the Middle East conflict, which have been escalating over the past couple of weeks among all parties involved, including alarming threats to wipe out entire populations and target non-combatant infrastructure.

Turk’s statement decried the situation as “disturbingly reprehensible,” emphasizing that carrying out such threats would constitute the most egregious international offenses. He urged an immediate halt to the dissemination of “paralyzing fear” and “terror” among civilians.

Turk underscored that, under international law, deliberately targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure constitutes a grave war crime. He stressed that those responsible for such international crimes must be brought to justice by a competent court.
