6 of the Best Travel Destinations in the Mediterranean

If you are chasing the sun, you will find it in Mediterranean holiday destinations between May and September each year. Most of them have at least 300 days a year sunshine so although it can be sunny outside of these months, it is often not quite so warm or accompanied by a breeze. There are so many destinations to choose from you can be spoilt for choice, so here are suggestions for 6 of the best travel destinations in the Mediterranean.

Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Isles

Palma has no end of shops from the high street names to designer shops and small independents selling locally made goods. It sits on the coast of Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic Isles.  While in the city, visiting its famous cathedral is a must, and there are no end of bars, cafes and restaurants selling whatever type of food you are after. From the Palma Cathedral you can stroll up Passeig des Born, one of the most well-known shopping avenues, which is flanked by numerous trees and plants and is always very popular with tourist and locals.

It is not just a city of buildings though. Palma has many green areas and play areas, including a large park right in the centre.

Gozo, Malta

Gozo the small sister island of Malta is a true gem when you are searching the brochures for a Mediterranean holiday location. Just a 25-minute ferry ride from Malta, the island has a culture all of its own, which makes a holiday here a unique experience. Steeped in history with monuments like the Ggantija Temples and the Citadel, the island also offers all the modern conveniences that tourists expect. Known for the local produce used in their cuisine, trying the foods and wines of Gozo is a must.

It is known internationally as one of the best centres for diving and other water sports, but you will also find places for a lazy beach day if that is what you are after.  Tours buses with open tops will take you all around the island, the full trip taking just 45 minutes. However, you can hop on and off them as you please, so they are a good way of getting from one place to another.

The warm and welcoming inhabitants of the island have a passion for Opera, and in the main city of Victoria you will find two theatres close to each other that usually perform top full houses. It is not the place to visit if you want to party 24 hours a day, but if you want a choice of visiting ancient monuments, enjoying a book by the pool, having a swim or snorkel, or any other relaxing activity, then Gozo is the place for you.

Paphos, Cyprus

As one of the hotter holiday destinations, it is probably best to avoid taking tots or the elderly to Paphos in July and August when the temperatures can reach over 91 degrees F. Other than that, Paphos is a good bet for a Mediterranean holiday destination because it caters for all tastes. It is a vibrant mix of Greek Mythology and modern tourism, which have been blended to make this a magical place to visit.

Kos, Greece

Kos is ones of Greece’s most charming islands, with sheltered shady beaches that have plenty of activities for all ages. You can try your luck at wind surfing or snorkelling, or just sit on the beach and enjoy a drink from one of the many bars you will find sitting on the sands. It even has some beaches that you can only access by boat.

The town of Kos is a great place to unwind, although it is the heart of all activities on the island. There is plenty of choice food wise, and for an easy to relax or play holiday, Kos could be the ideal location.

Corsica, France

Sitting of the south coast of France, Corsica is not as tamed as most of the other Mediterranean islands. It is nicknamed ‘the little mongrel’ because it is a French island that enjoys the Italian sun. Its red cliffs can look like they clash with the beautifully blue waters, but the beaches are great for relaxing. The bars and restaurants will delight you with their foods and wines and there is no end of shops and other activities for tourist and locals alike.

Albufeira, Portugal

This is the resort in the Algarve that attracts families, couples and people that want to party. They have managed to contain the party areas to certain parts of the city, away from the families and for couples looking for a candlelit dinner. The city has been very successful at achieving this, so it really can boast that they cater for every type of holiday no matter what you are after. They even cater for bird watchers.

Finding Your Destination

There are so many places in the Mediterranean that it can be hard to choose. Many of them are islands, but of course there are also the mainland coastal places as well. Whichever one you opt for, you will find a friendliness among the locals that is unrivalled, and experience local food and drink that explains why the Mediterranean diet is so healthy.
