High-stakes Diplomacy Brings Islamabad to a Halt

The Pakistani government has effectively sealed off the capital city as it prepares to host a pivotal meeting between US and Iranian officials, which has been labeled by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as a “make or break” encounter.
Upon entering Pakistani airspace, the Iranian delegation’s aircraft was enveloped in a comprehensive security cordon comprising AWACS early warning aircraft, electronic warfare planes, and fighter jets, which escorted the team to Islamabad.
Upon arrival, the delegation was greeted by the country’s top defence officials, the foreign minister, and the interior minister, with the speaker of the Iranian parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, at the helm.
Normally bustling, Islamabad’s main thoroughfare, which passes through the commercial heart of the city known as the Blue Area, has come to a grinding halt.
To facilitate the high-profile visit, the government has declared a two-day public holiday, and a contingent of 10,000 security personnel has been deployed to ensure the delegation’s safety.
As the Iranian convoy made its way from the airport, it was shielded by the Special Services Group, Pakistan’s elite commando unit.
