Italian Minister Seeks EU Flexibility on Budget Deficit Restrictions

Italy’s economy minister, Giancarlo Giorgetti, has suggested that the European Union might revisit its stringent budget deficit guidelines for member states, amid ongoing economic repercussions from the US-Israel conflict with Iran. The EU’s existing regulations mandate that member countries maintain budget deficits below 3% of their GDP.

Giorgetti expressed his views to reporters in Rome, stating that a collective EU discussion on the matter would become unavoidable if the current economic situation persists. He has already brought up the issue with his European counterparts, indicating a growing desire for flexibility within the EU’s fiscal framework.
