Lebanon-Israel Tensions Cast a Shadow Over Upcoming US-Iran Talks in Pakistan

As the US and Iran prepare to engage in diplomatic discussions in Pakistan, Georgetown University in Qatar’s professor Mehran Kamrava has pinpointed three major hurdles that could hinder the negotiation process.

According to Kamrava, the initial challenge lies in the ongoing Israeli-Lebanese conflict, which he believes is creating a toxic environment that threatens to undermine the talks even before they commence.

Kamrava also highlighted the issue of sanctions as a significant roadblock, stating that Iran views them as non-negotiable. He noted that while Washington’s 15-point proposal does address the possibility of sanctions relief, the extent of primary and secondary sanctions removal remains a contentious topic.

Lastly, Kamrava pointed out that Iran’s determination to maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz is another major obstacle in the negotiation process.
