US Emboldened to Target Iran’s Civilian Infrastructure Amid Global Disregard for International Law

According to Sara Segneri, a seasoned international law expert, the alarming lack of accountability for international actors who engage in aggressive acts or attacks on civilian infrastructure has essentially granted the United States a free pass to pursue similar tactics in Iran.

Segneri noted that the prevailing “culture of impunity” leaves victims with little to no recourse when seeking justice, and she cautioned that the ongoing disregard for the laws of war is likely to persist.

“It’s deeply concerning to witness prominent figures like Trump and Hegseth openly vowing to send Iran back to a bygone era, targeting civilian infrastructure with reckless abandon, including even schools,” Segneri stated. “As this disturbing trend continues, it’s chilling to see the US launching strikes on civilian infrastructure without any apparent consideration for proportionality or strategic advantage.”

Segneri also pointed out that Iran’s targeting of civilian infrastructure in response would not be justified, as committing war crimes does not grant the other side a right to retaliate in kind.
