Gilgit (Staff Reporter) – The two historic water channels of Gilgit city, Upper and Lower, once the lifelines for irrigation and drinking water, have lost their original form and purpose due to institutional neglect and inaction. Previously a source of clean water, these reservoirs have become dumping grounds for shop waste and market refuse, while encroachments have severely disrupted their natural flow. Garbage, chemicals, and toxic runoff from homes, barber shops, and auto workshops pour into the channels, contaminating the water and creating serious health risks. Every year, formal tenders are issued for cleaning the channels, but contractors merely collect paper, bottles, and plastic bags to complete paperwork, leaving tons of soil, stones, and sludge untouched. This mismanaged “clean‑up” has continuously reduced the channels’ volume, turning these historic assets into mere drainage ditches. Once environmentally significant, they are now hotspots for waste, summer stench, and mosquito breeding, edging toward extinction. Social activist Alamgir Hussain has urged the Deputy Commissioner of Gilgit and the Assistant Commissioner to take immediate notice of this critical urban and environmental issue and to implement solid, science‑based measures—rather than traditional methods—to restore and protect the water channels, safeguarding Gilgit’s heritage and providing residents with a cleaner environment.
